Caniglia-Easton Press Artwork

I am going to start posting a series of 30 paintings and drawings that I recently created for the upcoming Easton Press release of O. Henry’s short story collection. The first art pieces that I wanted to show are from the story called “The Last Leaf”.

This story takes place in New York City where two young women share an apartment. They, like all the tenants in their building, are artists who earn their daily break making drawings for magazine advertisements. All the artists, though, hope to paint a masterpiece, someday.

One of the girls has come down with pneumonia. She isn't in a hospital (as she would be today) but is being nursed by her roommate. The doctor has visited the apartment and advises the healthy girl that her ill friend will only recover if she has the will to live.

The sick girl is in bed staring out the window. On this rainy November day, she is staring through the window watching leaves fall from a vine on the opposite building wall. She announces that when the last leaf falls, she will die. What happens next in the story is a miracle and shows the beauty of self-sacrifice and the spirit of the human condition.

Here are 4 pieces that will be featured in the upcoming collection.

I will post more pieces this week.

New Books Featuring Caniglia Art

I currently have 5 books out that feature my personal art, cover art, and interior illustrations in them. The first is Tabitha King’s new limited edition from Cemetery Dance Publications called “Small World”. This book features my cover art and interior illustrations. This book is brilliant and Peter Straub had this to say about the book “Small World is so clever it could cut your skin. Tabitha King knows how to create suspense. She has a unique and self-possessed view of things and a talent for the grotesque."

Cemetery Dance also released three new books that feature my cover art and interiors. Two of them are by the amazing Tom Piccirilli. “Bad Dog” is a new volume of Tom Piccirilli's most offbeat and unsettling short fiction and novellas spanning the breadth of his twenty-year career. Twice nominated for crime fiction's highest honor, the Edgar Award, and twice winner of the International Thriller Writers Award, Piccirilli is a master of dark characterization and noir atmosphere. Find out for yourself why Tom Piccirilli is on so many "must read" lists when you open the pages of Bad Dog and lose yourself in the diverse stories and characters within. His other new novel “Backshot” is a dark western that shows why Piccirilli is a gifted genius of oddities and hard-hitting melancholy. Tom passed away last year after a long bout with cancer but his work and words live on!

The forth book that features new cover art and interiors is Ed Gorman’s book also called “Backshot” that plays off of Piccirilli’s characters set in the old west. Publishers Weekly praised the book as one of the years best and “A western for grownups written in a lean, hardboiled style.” Gorman has won numerous awards for his work that include the Shamus and the International Fiction Award. He's been nominated twice for an Edgar and once for the UK's Silver Dagger. His novel The Poker Club was made into the film of the same name.

The last book that currently features my artwork is the new “Infected By Art (IBA) volume 3.” The collection features the Best of the World’s Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror Art. This groundbreaking collector’s edition features over 300 pieces of art from the world’s best fantasy, science fiction, and horror artists in a range of various mediums.

Most of these books have sold out and are about to sell out. I will have more updates later this week on my Easton Press project.

Thanks
