Every evening students at The Nerdrum School draw and paint with the master Odd Nerdrum. Drawing from life is essential and using the Apelles Palette is part of the tradition of painters from the Greeks to the present. Here are a few pictures taken by Bork Nerdrum showing Caniglia and other students during the life drawing sessions.
Striking, illuminating, foreboding, offensive, haunting and always poignant, Caniglia's kitsch paintings wallow in the glory of expansiveness and timeless places. A successful painter, his work is in private collections around the world. He has contributed to both joint and solo fine art exhibitions at Museums and Galleries that include the Society of Illustrators (NY) , Allentown Museum, and the Joslyn Art Museum. Caniglia also gives art lectures at Museums, Universities, and Galleries.

Caniglia Salmagundi Art Exhibition 2017
My painting titled “Up on Melancholy Hill” is part of the
upcoming Salmagundi Landscape Exhibition which coincides with the current ARC
Salon Live Exhibition which is on view in the upper gallery. Both Exhibitions
showcase the very best in contemporary realism. The Salmagundi Club, founded in
1871, is one of the oldest art galleries and organizations in America.
The Salmagundi Club became an important center for American realism
and takes great pride in its roster of members which include renowned master artists,
George Inness, William Merritt Chase, Howard Pyle, Frederick Church, Dean
Cornwell, John Francis Murphy, Frank H. Desch, Winston Churchill, N.C. Wyeth, and
many others. If you are in NYC please come out and visit the gallery and see
the new exhibitions. Salmagundi is located at 47 Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village.
Thanks

Caniglia Art
I am currently updating my website, so for those of you looking for
exhibition dates, artwork for sale, and my latest works those will be added on
the new site. If you are interested in any painting or drawing I post, please
send an e-mail and I will let you know if it is available or what gallery it
currently is being exhibited at.
I am also going to post some of my latest oil studies and random raw
sketches from my piles of sketchbooks. Whether you are an architect, sculpture,
or painter it is incredibly important to sketch and draw. Sketching is freedom
of the imagination. It is so raw and visceral and gets initial ideas down on
paper and helps the artist express what is toiling in their heart and soul.
Artist studies and sketchbook are an extension of who they are on paper. It is
our weapon of choice to combat a world that we don’t always understand. For me
sketches construe more emotion than the final work itself, in strokes of truth
in the most experimental form.
Thank you for your support,
Caniglia

Caniglia - Guillermo Del Toro Exhibition
This past week I spent some time in Minneapolis. I love
visiting my sister and her amazing family. We went to The Art Academy in which
I was able to talk to the upcoming artists and the Atelier’s master instructors
Sarah Howard and Jim Robison. I also experienced the wonderful baristas and
coffee at Spyhouse Coffee Roasting Company.
One of the highlights of my trip was the galleries and
Museums of Minneapolis. I had the opportunity to go to the opening at the
Minneapolis Institute of Art of “At Home With Monsters”, a new exhibit from the
collection of Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. The exhibition is incredible and was packed
with lines all weekend. Del Toro has created a timeless horrific visions of the
past and future.
Del Toro had some incredible insight and quotes about
current events in the United States and around the world. He talked about how
current society has dismantled the difference between “truth and lie” which has
caused society to lose sight of our compass as humans. He also talked about the
idea of Imaginative realism and fantasy.
He said, “For me fantasy is a way to make peace with a whole side of our
existence and our cosmos that any other sane thing does not deal with. We have
many dimensions in our lives. One is social, one is political. We have to be
involved in that. One is as a citizen and another is as an artist.”
The exhibition features hundreds of items from his personal
treasure trove which included many of my fellow friends and artist. Tom
Kuebler, E. M. Gist, Travis Louie, Bernie Wrightson and Edward Gorey. The
paintings, drawings, sculptures and books are from different time periods of
the World of macabre works. Some are inspired by imaginative realism, Kitsch
art, Surrealist, animators, illustrators, dark art noir films, classic movies, and
literature that have inspired Del Toro’s journey. It was nice to see the
Minneapolis Museum exhibit works of fantastic and imaginative figurative art in
a major showcase event.
If you get the chance, try to see this exhibition or by the
catalogue which is well worth the price. I have included some pictures from the
event.
